Sunday Suppers

10 Apr

TO EAT:

The weather was glorious all weekend, so we spent most of it outside – this Sunday supper was no exception. We were looking for something light and summery, so we did Grilled Shrimp and Jamie Oliver’s Carrot Salad from his book Jamie’s Food Revolution

Sunday Suppers, Round 2

3 Apr

Here we go again, another round of Sunday Suppers!

TO EAT:

I love beets. I love risotto. What I discovered on this Sunday supper is that I do not like beets and risotto together. For dinner  we made Grilled Flat Iron Steaks with Beet and Kale Risotto, a Cooking Light recipe from an Austin restaurant (yay Austin) called Olivia.

Sunday Suppers

27 Mar

For years, we’ve been saving our Sunday evenings for a little bigger, more cooking intensive dinner. But lately, we’ve been making a point to make an evening out of it, pairing a nice meal with a classic movie and a dessert. It’s a great start to the week, and ensures we start our week relaxed, in touch with each other and, well, full.  So, begins another series on this little blog of mine, the Sunday Supper Series.

TO EAT:

Dinner was an amazing spring meal, with a delicious steak (yay for red meat!) as the centerpiece of the meal.

Our main course was Bon Appetit’s Steak with Parmesan Butter, Balsamic Glaze and Arugula.

We skipped out on the Arugula though, and instead, paired it with Cooking Light’s Asparagus and Spring Greens Salad with Gorgonzola Vinaigarette.

We finished it off with a bit of refrigerator clean out, roasting fennel and using some of Pauby’s garlic butter and baguettes left over from our Spring Party to make a yummy cheesy garlic bread. (mmmmm cheesy garlic bread.)

TO DRINK:

Um, hello Shanty you are lovely! We had lots of beer and citrus left over from the spring party, so we put it to good use with a Shanty. Shanty is actually a British pub that was looking for a way to make the beer a little less alcoholic. It’s actually called a Shanty Gaff, which means pub water. Doesn’t that sound appetizing?

Kirk made these lovely specimen (perhaps he’ll post them on his blog, The Black Glass sometime soon):

1 part yummy lager or pilsner

1 part Sprite

A squeeze of lime

TO WATCH:

Before Christian Bale. Before George Clooney, Val Kilmer AND Michael Keaton, there was Adam West. In an outfit that looks like I whipped it up for a 3rd graders Halloween costume. Batman – The Movie was a ridiculous (and ridiculously funny) 60s-take on Batman and his trusty sidekick Robin. Of course, this was before they thought to stretch it into a multi-million dollar decades-long sequel of a sequel of a sequel, so all your favorite villains are in it, too. Joker, Penguin, Riddler, even Catwoman run around in equally ridiculous costumes. It’s fun for the whole family (vs. the most recent ones) although Catwoman licks her paws enough to push it to a PG-13, in my humble opinion. Be on the watch for the exploding attack shark. Holy flashback, Batman!

TO FINISH:

For dessert, we split a margarita cupcake from the sweet author of Cupcake Dangerous along with homemade ice cream. Delish, and the perfect way to start the week.
